HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT- Is this a Douçaine I see before me?
Thursday 9th November 1.30pm
Presenter: Eric Moulder

Very little is known about this instrument and there is a lot of confusion due to the number of different names it’s been given. There are no surviving originals, other than an instrument, attributed as a douçaine, found on the Mary Rose. “Hidden in Plain Sight - Is this a Douçaine I see before me”? looks at the evidence and references and explores the possibility that what are often considered as shawms are really douçaines. The main theme of the talk is to make people question what they are seeing when they look at iconography. The presentation also clears up, for the first time, the distinction between a douçaine and a doulzaina.

"INTIMATE THOUGHTS"
Thursday 9th November 4.00pm
Presenter: Walter Reiter

I have called this programme “Intimate Thoughts” because what most of the pieces have in common is that sense of introspection and profundity of emotion, be it of sorrow or of exhilaration, which makes the solo violin repertoire of the Baroque period so uniquely rich.

The programme is presented as a sequence, lasting under an hour with no applause, and consists of music by Bassano, Matteis, Biber, Vilsmyer, Telemann and Bach.
Approx. 1 hour.
